Use of breast length as a quantitative trait in characterisation of indigenous chickens in Semi-arid Nigeria

Indigenous chickens are the major source of organic meat and eggs. A study was carried out to determine their quantitative traits from six states (Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Sokoto, Zamfara Kebbi) in semi-arid region, Nigeria. Quantitative were measured on 240 adult indigenous sampled 20 households area. The results showed that sexual dimorphism exists between hens cocks. males had higher values most measured. Location significant (p<0.05) effect wing length, drumstick body back width chest depth. also revealed positive association bodyweight other for both hen Stepwise multiple regression f morphometric combination breast width, thigh neck length head circumference accounted 72% variation cocks while five (breast depth, beak length) 67% hens. Cocks have more dimorphism. It is however, recommended a trait can be used as determinant size improvement selection breeding programmes chickens.
